Middle Matters Applicant Criteria & Links to Current Partner School Districts
Middle Matters, a Transition to Teaching grant with James Madison University, is seeking professionals with a mathematics or science degree interested in transitioning to teaching middle or secondary school mathematics or science in rural Virginia school districts. The project aims to recruit and support to full licensure experienced mid-career professionals (not currently licensed teachers) who have the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of students in small, rural school districts. Project teachers are hired by a partnering school district while simultaneously becoming fully-licensed teachers. Selected applicants will be hired by the school district to teach adolescents, in a Science or Mathematics classroom, while receiving mentoring and new-teacher support. Middle Matters staff will partner with school districts to provide selected recruits with the required coursework for licensure, guidance and mentoring, classroom teaching assistance, and professional development opportunities while teaching full-time.
APPLICANTS MUST MEET THESE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
-- Bachelor’s degree (in a mathematics/science oriented field) from an accredited institution
-- at least three (3) years of full-time post-baccalaureate work experience
-- NOT holding a current teaching license (Full or Provisional) or expired Provisional License or a teaching license from any state
-- willingness to commit to teaching in the rural, high-needs school district for at least three years upon completion of licensure.
IN ADDITION -- Applicants will apply directly to partner school districts for open positions in these districts. Middle Matters is not a hiring agency, but supports school districts through recruitment of qualified career switchers. Interviews and hiring decisions are completed by the partnering school districts.
