Middle Matters - A Transition to Teaching Project
MIDDLE MATTERS (M2) is a collaborative partnership between James Madison University’s College of Education (COE), Office of Outreach and Engagement (OOE), and Virginia’s high-needs school systems with the goals to design a substantially replicable alternative teacher licensure and professional development model for school divisions in rural areas that provides accelerated, alternative teacher preparation and traditional professional development to increase the number of highly qualified and effective middle grades science and mathematics teachers, and to design products and processes that improve the effectiveness of recruitment, selection, and retention of highly qualified teachers, especially in STEM related areas.
THE PROJECT is seeking professionals (with Mathematics and Science backgrounds) who are non-licensed teachers and desire to "make a positive difference" by Transitioning into Teaching through an alternative licensure model. Currently, we are collaborating with several rural school districts in Virginia to find applicants for their unfilled mathematics and science teaching positions at the middle and secondary level. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, see the link at the top of the page for criteria.
- Cohort 1 began teaching in Hopewell City, Virginia Schools in August 2012
- Cohort 2 will begin teaching in Rural Virginia Schools in August 2013
